Nissan postpones electric cars to be produced in the US
Nissan announced that it would invest in electric cars by transforming its factories in the US. It was even stated that two electric models would be introduced and produced in the US within the year. However, the company’s plans changed and electric cars were withdrawn.
Nissan will focus on introducing five new electric models in the crossover SUV segment by 2026. Sedans will continue to be part of Nissan’s long-term production planning. However, the company believes that SUVs can adapt to the market faster, given current demand trends.
Automakers have recently been selling fewer electric cars than expected. Nissan is one of the links in this weak market. In the US, crossover SUVs and pickup trucks have been favored over sedans in recent years.
Nissan first set out its ambitious electrification targets in March. By 2026, it said it would produce seven electric vehicles in the US. However, sources reported that the company has halted plans to produce its first next-generation electric vehicles in the country.
